Italy: The oldest café in the world can be found in Venice

It's safe to say that Caffè Florian stands as a living monument to a bygone era in St. Mark's Square. Since its opening in 1720, the iconic coffeehouse has not only stood the test of time, but has captivated generations of visitors.
Travelers and locals alike flock to the café to enjoy the house's culinary offerings. These include not only classic Italian coffee creations, but also traditional Venetian pastries and an atmosphere steeped in history and elegance. As Italy's oldest continuously operating coffee house, Florian is more than just a place to enjoy a coffee: it preserves the ancient Venetian tradition.
Floriano Francesconi laid the foundation for Caffè Florian . He opened his shop, the "Bottega del caffè," under the arcades of the Procuratie Nuove. Initially known as "Alla Venezia Trionfante," it was quickly renamed after its founder.
Over the centuries, the Florian became a center for art and intellectual exchange, attracting famous guests such as authors Casanova, Lord Byron, and Charles Dickens. Statesmen also met at the Caffè Florian to debate political matters.

Even during the war years, Caffè Florian remained a vibrant hub and a haven that never closed its doors. It continued to offer its guests a light meal, refreshing drinks, and the invaluable value of conviviality.
Upon entering Caffè Florian, you are immediately immersed in a world of opulence. In the halls, completely restored in the mid-19th century, you can take a seat and marvel at the ornate murals and gilded mirrors that create an atmosphere of timeless elegance.

From April to September, visitors can also enjoy the gentle sounds of live music. A stage is usually set up in front of the Florian, allowing artists to perform their repertoire against the picturesque backdrop of St. Mark's Square.
Today, Caffè Florian specializes in creatively reinterpreting traditional recipes. Classics like Bolognese aren't served in their original form, but are reimagined as quiches. Another highlight is the innovative version of cannelloni, which uses thin slices of eggplant filled with Casatella cheese, mozzarella, and fresh pesto instead of the usual pasta.
In addition to classic Italian coffee specialties – from strong espresso to creamy cappuccino – the café also offers a variety of fine teas, cakes and gelatos, allowing guests a sweet journey into the history of Venetian baking and ice cream.
