Lufthansa: Aircraft must turn around over the Atlantic after engine failure

Frankfurt/Main. A Lufthansa aircraft en route from New York to Frankfurt was forced to abort its flight and turn around due to an engine failure over the Atlantic. "During the climb, one engine experienced a significant increase in fuel consumption," Lufthansa stated in response to an inquiry. The engine failure occurred during the subsequent cruise flight.
The cockpit crew then submitted an emergency request to air traffic control, the airline said. The plane returned to its departure airport, JFK, landed, and taxied to position on its own. According to the airline, the incident occurred on May 13.
The engine in question was examined, and a defective control unit was identified as the source of the problem. This was replaced. "The aircraft has been back in service for several days," the company stated. Several other media outlets previously reported on the incident.
