Thanks to a sophisticated infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, Munich is the most pedestrian-friendly city in the world. A full 86 percent of residents live in the immediate vicinity of car-free zones.
According to a new study, Munich is the most pedestrian-friendly city in the world. The German city scores highly with its numerous car-free zones and well-developed infrastructure for cyclists, as the New York Post reports.
According to the New York Post, 86 percent of Munich residents live within one mile (about 1.6 kilometers) of car-free zones. This, along with one million miles of bike paths, secured the city's first place. The price comparison website Compare the Market conducted the study, evaluating cities worldwide based on criteria such as access to public transportation, safety, and proximity to services.

In Europe, competition is fierce: Milan and Warsaw follow Munich in second and third place. Cities like Helsinki and Paris also made it into the top 5, according to the New York Post.
In comparison, New York City ranks lower at 34th place, although it still ranks first in the U.S. San Francisco and Boston follow as the most walkable cities in the U.S.
Munich tops the list of the unfriendly cities, followed by Berlin, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. The survey highlights that in Munich, the behavior of locals is perceived as unpleasant, such as a lack of politeness in the elevator. Berlin is also criticized for its direct style of communication, the so-called "Berliner Schnauze."
In addition to German cities, international metropolises are also represented in the ranking:
- 1st place: Munich
- 2nd place: Berlin
- 3rd place: Hamburg
- 4th place: Vienna
- 5th place: Frankfurt
- 6th place: Vancouver
- 7th place: Paris
- 8th place: Oslo
- 9th place: Rome
- 10th place: Istanbul
