About 180 cadets from the Cuauhtémoc ship return after crash with the Brooklyn Bridge

Some 180 of the 277 Mexican cadets aboard the training ship Cuauhtémoc are in optimal condition to return home on a flight from John F. Kennedy Airport in the United States.
This was confirmed by the Mexican ambassador to the U.S., Esteban Moctezuma, and the head of the Mexican Navy (Semar) and Navy, Raymundo Pedro Morales, through their social media accounts.
"Committed to the well-being of our crew, and in strict adherence to medical protocols, naval personnel who have been evaluated and are in optimal condition to travel will return home shortly," the Secretary of the Navy stated.
Meanwhile, it was Moctezuma who in a video published on his X account reported that there are about 180 cadets returning to the country from John F. Kennedy Airport.
"We are completing all the paperwork to allow 180 cadets who had this unfortunate experience to board a plane to Mexico (…) We hope they return safely to our country, and we wish them strength, resilience, and continued pursuit of their dream of working and living in Mexico," he commented in a short video.
For their part, the nearly 100 cadets who remained behind are being monitored by the Semar (National Maritime Security Service), in coordination with authorities from the Mexican Embassy and the U.S. government, Morales said.
"For the sailors who remain to be transferred, the Navy maintains close communication and coordination with the authorities of the Mexican and U.S. embassies to provide the necessary support," he indicated.
He also noted that the military institution "protects them and that their health and well-being are, and will continue to be, our highest priority."
The incident occurred Saturday night as the Cuauhtémoc, with 277 people on board, was preparing to depart for Iceland, following a visit to New York that began on May 13 as part of its public diplomacy and naval training mission.
The head of the Semar previously assured that the investigations to determine the causes of the accident are progressing with "transparency and responsibility."
So far, local authorities have reported that the Brooklyn Bridge has not suffered any structural damage, while problems with the towing system have been reported, although no official clarification has yet been given.
The ship remains anchored in the East River while the corresponding evaluations are carried out.
