Amazing: The Cascada de los Duendes in Bariloche freezes due to the polar cold

The polar cold wave that is shaking Patagonia and much of Argentina left an unforgettable image in Nahuel Huapi National Park: the emblematic Cascada de los Duendes , located west of San Carlos de Bariloche, woke up completely frozen on Monday.

This phenomenon, uncommon in recent years, has generated astonishment among visitors and has gone viral on social media, becoming one of the most striking images of winter 2025. The same thing happened in Córdoba, on the border with San Luis, at the Salto del Tigre waterfall .

Park ranger Sebastián D'Ingianti , during his morning walk along the Gutiérrez Lake trail, discovered the spectacle at 8:30 in the morning.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my five years working here,” he told Diario Río Negro.

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), Bariloche recorded a temperature of -13.2°C , with a thermal sensation of -16.9°C, conditions that caused the waterfall to freeze completely, leaving only a trickle of water flowing.

The phenomenon is not isolated. The cold wave has broken records in the region, with temperatures reaching -26°C in Mencué , Río Negro, and -18.4°C in Maquinchao , placing Argentina among the coldest countries in the world this week, along with Chile and Greenland.

In this context, the Cascada de los Duendes, a tourist attraction accessible via a low-difficulty trail from Lago Gutiérrez , has become a magnet for photographers and nature lovers seeking to capture this winter wonderland.
