Formal employment fell nationwide in April

Last April, 47,442 formal positions were lost in Mexico, the first monthly decline so far this year , due to Holy Week, explained the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) according to the variation in the number of registered positions.

On the one hand, 1,365 permanent positions were created, but on the other, 48,807 temporary jobs were lost.

Thus, in the first four months of the year, only 179,289 formal jobs were created, a figure that is 48.7% lower than those reported in the same period of the previous year, the lowest number of positions created in that period since 2003 (excluding 2020 and 2009 when jobs were lost).

As of April 30, 2025, 22,417,668 jobs were registered with the IMSS, a figure just 0.2% higher than the figure observed a year earlier.

Annual increases were reported in 16 of the country's 32 states, with commerce being the most notable, registering the largest increase in jobs at 2.3 percent.

The economic sectors with the largest annual percentage increase in jobs are commerce (2.3%), electricity (2.1%), and social and community services (1.6%).

On the other hand, the sectors that recorded the largest declines were construction, with an annual drop of 6.5%; mining, with a drop of -3%; and agriculture, with a drop of -2.8%.
