Inflation surprises the Mexican economy in the first half of May

The general increase in prices in the first half of May exceeded the median of analysts' projections, which was 3.99% at an annual rate However, it was within the range of expectations : from a minimum of 3.81% to a maximum of 4.26% , as forecast by the 34 financial institutions surveyed by Citi.

Inflation in Mexico rebounded in the first half of May, reaching 4.22% at an annual rate, above the Bank of Mexico's target range for the first time since late last year, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

Contrary to the decline most analysts expected, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) saw a 0.09% increase in this period compared to the previous year, the largest increase for that period since 2020.

On the other hand, among the generics whose prices were most influenced by the decline were: electricity with a biweekly decrease of 18.45% due to the warm season tariff program starting in 11 cities; Tequila, -3.82%; lemon, -7.31%; table wine, -2.49%; rum, -3.85%; refrigerators, -4.28%; women's pants, -2.02%; low-octane gasoline, -0.12%; zucchini, -3.96%; and the other fruit segment, -2.10%. .

The core price index, which includes goods and services with less volatile prices, grew by 0.16% in the first half of the fifth month of the year and by 3.97% annually, higher than the 3.96% observed in the previous two weeks. Inside, the prices of Merchandise increased by 3.51% and services by 4.49%. , both compared to the same period last year.

The non-core price index fell 0.15% in the first half of May, bringing its annual increase to 4.78%, compared to the 3.57% increase observed in the previous period. Within the indicator, prices of Agricultural products grew 5.79% at an annual rate , while those of Energy and government-authorized rates increased by 3.71% .

Finally, the Minimum Consumption Basket Price Index, which evaluates the prices of 176 products and services that comprise it, had a decrease in the first half of this month biweekly variation of 0.05% and an annual increase of 4.09% .
