Rail chaos between Madrid and southern Spain: affected trains, transportation alternatives, and traveler assistance phone numbers

Rail chaos between Madrid and southern Spain: affected trains, transportation alternatives, and traveler assistance phone numbers

The chaos continues on trains to and from Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes southbound, due to work to restore service following Monday's incident with an overhead line between Yeles and La Sagra. Although service had initially been restored, delays were reported this morning due to the difficulty of towing two trains stranded for 14 hours between Toledo and Madrid.

This morning, Adif delayed train service on up to three occasions, finally announcing that southbound rail traffic would be interrupted "until further notice" due to infrastructure repair work that is taking longer than estimated.

Which trains are affected

Adif has reported that 50 trains are affected, including five Iryo trains and three Ouigo trains. The difficulty in rescuing two trains affected by the incident prevents southern corridor trains to and from Madrid and/or Seville, Malaga, Granada, Cadiz, and Huelva, as well as medium-distance trains to Toledo and Ciudad Real/Puertollano, from running until further notice.

How long will the incident last?

Adif has not provided an estimated time for rail traffic to return to normal. This morning, it announced schedule changes for southbound trains from Madrid Puerta de Atocha to Almudena Grandes on three occasions, only to finally confirm that the incident had not been resolved and that it would take longer than expected.

Two trains, one of them carrying passengers, remain stopped early Tuesday morning on high-speed tracks due to an overhead line failure that occurred Monday in the province of Toledo. Throughout the night, several trains affected by the power outage have been removed, or those that could not be removed from the tracks have been evacuated. However, one train with passengers still remains stopped near the municipality of Villaseca de la Sagra (Toledo), and another train remains empty.
