This is the age group with the highest average salary in Spain: those under 30 are at the bottom.

The latest INE salary structure survey shows that the average annual salary per worker was €28,049.94 in 2023, 4.1% higher than the previous year.

The National Statistics Institute also reveals the median wage (which divides the number of workers into two equal parts: those with a higher salary and those with a lower salary) and the modal wage (which was most common, accounting for 4.6% of wage earners).

If we look at these two statistics, when divided more precisely, wages in Spain decrease. Thus, the median wage stood at €23,349.00 in 2023, while the modal wage was around € 15,574.85 .

In this regard, the INE highlights that there was a shift in the lowest salaries to the range of €15,000 to €16,000, which is the most common. "One in four wage earners (25.6%) had an annual income between €14,000 and €20,000," the press release highlights.

As gross annual salary increases, the percentage of workers receiving it decreases. Thus, only 1.34% earned at least €35,000 gross annually; 0.27% earned at least €60,000; and 0.06% earned at least €95,000.

The INE survey also reveals which economic activities had the highest average annual wages. In this case, it was the electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply industry, with €54,447.96 per worker, while the hospitality industry and other services had the lowest average annual wages, at €16,985.78 and €19,751.59, respectively.

But beyond the main data, the INE also allows us to investigate the average earnings per worker and by age group. In this case, the group with the highest income was those between 55 and 59 years old, with average earnings of €31,231.39 .

They are followed by the 60- to 64-year-old, 65-and-over, and 50- to 54-year-old age groups. All of them earn an average salary of over 30,887.92 euros.

But the other side of this ranking is those under 30. These age groups are at the bottom of the ranking, with average incomes even lower than those of all age groups combined.

The 30- to 34-year-old age group had an average income of €25,222.51 , followed by the 25- to 29-year-old group with €21,039.12, and the 20- to 24-year-old group with €15,364.17 . Those under 20 years of age did not reach this latter amount.

These are figures for 2023, which were just published by the INE at the end of May.

In terms of territories, the highest salaries in 2023 corresponded to the Basque Country (€33,504.92 per worker), the Community of Madrid (€32,219.60), and the Foral Community of Navarra (€31,199.66), while the lowest were in Extremadura, the Canary Islands, and Castilla-La Mancha, with incomes below €25,000.
