First deaths from high temperatures reported in 2025

The Epidemiological Surveillance System's Weekly Report on Health Damage from Extreme Natural Temperatures reported the first fatalities of the 2025 heat season in Mexico.

According to the document, at least four people nationwide have died so far due to illnesses caused by the high temperatures, while another 335 have suffered health problems.

In epidemiological week 18, health institutions were notified of 67 cases of heat-related injuries and no deaths nationwide. However, the fatality rate from high temperatures has accumulated to 1.19% in recent weeks.

The report indicates that Veracruz is the state with the most deaths, as two people have died from burns so far.

In second place are San Luis Potosí and Tabasco, with one death per state due to heat stroke.

In this regard, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) explained that there is an anticyclonic circulation in the middle levels of the atmosphere, which will keep the environment hot to very hot in the Mexican Republic, with a heat wave prevailing over the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca, a fact for which precautions should be taken.

Of the 335 people with health problems, the General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Ssa) indicated that the main illnesses are heat exhaustion, with 191 cases; dehydration, with 131 cases; and, finally, burns, with a total of 13 cases nationwide.

Jalisco has the highest number of cases of people whose health has been affected by high temperatures, with 61, including 41 due to dehydration, 16 due to heat exhaustion, and 4 due to burns.

Tabasco is the state with the second highest number of heat-related injuries, with 57, of which 48 suffered heat stroke and 9 dehydration. Veracruz is in third place with 39 cases, of which 36 were heat strokes; two people suffered burns and one suffered dehydration.

Aguascalientes follows with 26 cases; then Chiapas with 21; in sixth place is Yucatán with 17; in seventh is Nuevo León with 13; in eighth is Morelos with 12; in ninth is Sonora with 12; and in tenth is Nayarit with 10.

In the coming days, according to the SMN, the hot to very hot environment will prevail in Jalisco (center, southwest and south), Colima (east and northeast), Michoacán (west, center and southeast), Guerrero (northwest and west) and Oaxaca (southwest and south), a condition that will extend to the states of Nayarit (center and north), Sinaloa (south and center), Durango (northwest, west and southwest) and Chihuahua (southwest).

Maximum temperatures of 40 to 45 °C will be expected in Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua (west and southwest), Durango (northwest), Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla (southwest and south), Tabasco, Chiapas (north), Campeche and Yucatán.

Likewise, maximum temperatures of 35 to 40 °C in Baja California Sur, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, State of Mexico (southwest), Veracruz (south), Oaxaca and Quintana Roo and a maximum temperature of 30 to 35 °C in Querétaro (southwest) and San Luis Potosí (southwest).
