Measles: Symptoms and how the disease is spread

Mexico remains on alert for a measles outbreak, especially in the north of the country, and among the measures to control the disease, the Ministry of Health (SSa) announced that it has expanded the age range for vaccination to 49 years and that Migrant workers will be vaccinated, especially in Chihuahua, where there is a higher number of cases.

In the face of an outbreak, it is important to know what measles is, what its symptoms are to identify it, and how the disease is transmitted.

First, regarding its contagion, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that measles is a highly contagious viral disease, which primarily affects children , and is transmitted by droplets from the nose, mouth and pharynx of infected people.

Among the symptoms, the WHO notes that these usually appear between 8 and 12 days after infection: they include high fever, runny nose, conjunctival injections, and small white spots on the inside of the cheek; days later, a rash appears, starting on the face and neck and gradually spreading to the rest of the body.

Indicates that there is no specific treatment for measles, and most patients recover within 2 or 3 weeks, however, it is a disease that can cause serious complications , such as blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia, especially in malnourished children and immunosuppressed patients.

Remember that measles is a vaccine -preventable disease.

Among its data, the WHO explains that measles is one of the leading causes of death in children worldwide, despite the existence of a safe and effective vaccine to prevent it, which is why they urge people to get the dose.
