Official! Argentina Will Vote on October 26, 2025, in Key National Elections, NO PASO Elections

By Decree No. 335, published on May 20, 2025, the National Government officially summoned the Argentine electorate to the general elections to be held on the fourth Sunday of October 2025, in compliance with the provisions of Article 53 of the National Electoral Code.
In these elections, a substantial part of the National Congress will be renewed:
- Chamber of Deputies: 127 National Deputies will be elected to replace those whose terms expire in 2025.
- Senate: 24 National Senators will be elected, corresponding to the provinces of Chaco, Entre Ríos, Neuquén, Río Negro, Salta, Santiago del Estero, Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
The number of seats at stake means that these elections will have a crucial impact on the future composition of Congress and, consequently, on the governing capacity of the ruling party and the strength of the opposition starting in December 2025. Depending on the results, the government could see its legislative position strengthened or, conversely, face a more hostile parliament, which could significantly shift the balance of power.
One of the key elements of this call is the confirmation of the suspension of the Primary, Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory Elections (PASO) for the 2025 electoral cycle. This measure, established by Law No. 27,783, significantly alters the traditional candidate selection process and the formation of alliances.
The PASO (Primary Elections), implemented in Argentina to democratize the internal selection of candidates for each party and coalition, also served as a sort of national survey and as a way of organizing the electoral offer ahead of the general elections. Their absence in 2025 will force political parties to resort to other internal mechanisms to define their lists, processes that can often be less transparent or more closely controlled by party leadership.
This new reality could favor traditional political apparatuses and hinder the emergence of new figures or coalitions outside established structures. It could also lead to greater fragmentation of the political spectrum or, conversely, to a concentration of power in the negotiation of candidacies. The official announcement, although expected according to legal deadlines, marks a milestone that formalizes the start of the electoral calendar and, in all likelihood, will intensify political activity and debate considerably ahead of schedule.
The National Electoral Directorate, which reports to the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Interior of the Chief of Staff of Ministers, will be responsible for adopting the necessary measures for the organization and execution of these national elections.
(Quote Block: «The electorate of the Argentine Nation is summoned for October 26, 2025, to proceed with the election of candidates for NATIONAL SENATORS and NATIONAL DEPUTIES.» – Based on Decree 335/2025)
With the date already set and the rules of the game partially modified by the absence of the PASO (Primary Elections), political actors will begin to make more visible moves, focusing on building alliances and defining strategies for a contest that is shaping up to be decisive.
