PAN proposes a federal fund to combat sargassum in the Caribbean in San Lázaro

PAN proposes a federal fund to combat sargassum in the Caribbean in San Lázaro

In order to structurally address the massive arrival of sargassum in the Mexican Caribbean, PAN federal representative Ernesto Sánchez Rodríguez proposed in the Chamber of Deputies the creation of a permanent federal fund to combat, manage, and utilize this seaweed, which seriously affects the coasts of Quintana Roo each year.

During a visit to the state, the legislator emphasized that the arrival of sargassum not only impacts the visual appeal of beaches, but also compromises the tourism economy, environmental balance, and the quality of life of thousands of families who depend on the sector.

Accompanied by the state president of the PAN, Reyna Tamayo, Sánchez Rodríguez noted that government responses so far have been "late and fragmented," which has significantly limited the effectiveness of the actions taken to contain the problem.

Faced with this situation, the PAN representative explained that his party is promoting a series of legislative initiatives that include not only the creation of the fund, but also incentives to transform sargassum into an economic opportunity, promoting its use in industries such as construction, agriculture, and biotechnology.

"The national strategy must go beyond reactive or seasonal measures. A comprehensive and permanent public policy is needed, with clear mechanisms for transparency and participation from all sectors," the legislator stated.

He also highlighted the importance of ensuring accountability in the use of public resources allocated to this issue, as well as the active inclusion of civil society, the private sector, and all three levels of government in the design and implementation of solutions.

The congressman acknowledged that, while sargassum is a natural phenomenon, its management should be a national priority, especially for states like Quintana Roo, where the economy depends largely on sun and beach tourism.

Finally, he emphasized that with political will and effective coordination, it is possible to reverse the negative effects of sargassum and turn it into a source of innovation, employment, and sustainable development for the region.
