The EU will review its association agreement with Israel over the situation in Gaza.

In Spain, Congress will vote on an embargo on arms sales with Israel following support from Junts.
The European Commission will review the association agreement signed with Israel following a complaint filed by Spain and 16 other countries, addressed to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice-President of the European Commission, Estonian Kaja Kallas .
In the aforementioned complaint, the group of 17 member states, which in addition to Spain include Ireland , the Netherlands , Slovenia and Luxembourg , refer to the need to respect human rights in the face of what they consider an "unsustainable, intolerable and inhumane" situation in the Gaza Strip, after the president of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu , stated a few days ago that his troops "will take over all of Gaza" and launch "an unprecedented attack" in the coming days.
Kallas also confirmed that only one country—Hungary, according to other diplomatic sources—blocked the imposition of new sanctions against Israel . "It is clear that the situation has deteriorated significantly , including on a number of issues where the EU expressed clear concern. Therefore, the time has come to give real meaning to Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement with concrete and meaningful measures," the letter stated.
After accepting the complaint, the European Commission will investigate whether Israel is complying with its human rights obligations , as outlined in the agreement between the EU and the country. "We will launch this exercise, and in the meantime, it is up to Israel to unblock the humanitarian aid," Kallas said after the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Twenty-Seven European Union (EU-27) on Tuesday.
The investigation could lead to measures such as the suspension of various areas of the agreement . These modifications could be carried out by qualified majority rather than unanimously, depending on the voting procedure established for each affected area.
Spanish embargo on IsraelIn parallel, Junts announced this Tuesday its support for a bill presented by Sumar and the Mixed Group to establish an embargo on arms purchases from Israel . The parliamentary group's decision, which came in parallel with a rally in Congress against Israel, will allow its consideration in the Lower House.
In addition to the proponent groups and Junts, the PSOE, ERC, EH Bildu and the PNV also announced their vote in favor, although some voices demanded more pressure measures , while others expressed reservations about some aspects of the text, such as the point that seeks to automatically impose an embargo on a country when a claim is filed against it before the International Court of Justice.
For their part, the Popular Party and Vox opposed the proposed law and accused the proponents of "anti-Semitism" and of creating a "legal hodgepodge that is anti-Israel and a sheer violation of the rule of law."
In this regard, PP MP Pablo Hispán stated in the Lower House that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez "with one hand refers to Israel as a genocidal state, while with the other he continues to award multi-million-dollar contracts to that nation, and the PSOE is in favor of regulating the embargo, while at the same time continuing to pay for dozens of contracts for the purchase of Israeli weapons and technology."
