Yesenia Lara, 49 , was widely known in the region. She was a municipal agent for Las Camelias and a trustee on the Texistepec City Council. She had been appointed as Promoter of the Fourth Transformation , so her candidacy for mayor was almost certain.
She was also a high school teacher, a professor at a technological institute, and worked in the banking sector. Her political history was already marked by tragedy: she was the wife of Enrique Argüelles Montero , a former council member assassinated in 2022. His murder remains unsolved.
The murder of Yesenia Lara is the second instance of violence against a Morena candidate in Veracruz during this electoral process. On April 29, Germán Anuar Valencia , a candidate for mayor of Coxquihui, was murdered by an armed group while launching his campaign. Five people were injured in the attack. These events occur three weeks before the June 1 elections , in which municipal presidencies and deputy positions will be renewed in Veracruz.
