The inter-party struggle threatens a salary increase at Barcelona City Hall.

The inter-party struggle threatens a salary increase at Barcelona City Hall.

Total uncertainty reigns at the Catalan capital's City Council after Barcelona en Comú (BComú) threatened on Monday to reject a €100 million credit supplement , which is to be debated this Wednesday by the municipal economic commission.

The party, which has former mayor Ada Colau as its main visible face, has accentuated its differences with its predecessor and current mayor , Jaume Collboni (PSC), due to the latter's desire to introduce changes to one of the main urban planning measures promoted by the Commons.

This is the obligation that developers have had since 2018 to allocate 30% of their budget to public housing , a measure that has paralyzed the construction sector. Yesterday, the Commons threatened to oppose a series of budget modifications that, according to municipal government sources, are a technical procedure usually agreed upon with the groups around this time.

The 2025 accounts have been extended, and in this case, modifications and a credit supplement would be introduced to address urgent needs that cannot be postponed to other years.

With this formula, new public transport discounts can be implemented to keep fares frozen, strengthen the social services budget, and cover staff expenses for the city council and its affiliated entities that have not been able to be extended.

These are "salary increases that have been agreed upon at the general meeting of the state civil service ," said Jordi Valls, Deputy Mayor for Economy, on Monday. The additional credit will be financed with the council's surplus, which also estimates that its income this year will be higher than the initial forecast it made at the beginning of the year.

BComú and ERC are Collboni's two priority partners, and he hasn't ruled out reaching agreements in later stages. The Republicans demanded other things from the PSC, such as more inspections of tourist apartments, according to their council member, Jordi Castellana.
