Samsung Z Flip 7: Giant screen on the lid to challenge Motorola

Samsung Z Flip 7: Giant screen on the lid to challenge Motorola

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is preparing for one of its biggest transformations yet. Renders and leaks confirm that Samsung will adopt a giant 4-inch cover display, a design that seeks to compete directly with the Motorola Razr's functionality.

The clamshell foldable phone war is about to heat up. For years, Samsung has dominated the market with its Galaxy Z Flip series, but has been criticized for the size and limited functionality of its exterior display compared to its main rival, the Motorola Razr. By 2025, it seems Samsung has listened and is preparing for a radical change.

Massive leaks and renders based on One UI 8 firmware confirm that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 will feature a much larger cover display, taking up almost the entire top half of the device.

A cover screen that changes everything

The most significant change to the Z Flip 7 will undoubtedly be its external display. Leaked details point to a complete design overhaul:

* Jump to 4 inches: Leaks suggest the cover display will grow from the Z Flip 6's 3.4 inches to an impressive 4 inches. This increase will allow for greater functionality without having to open the phone.

* Edge-to-edge design: Unlike the “folder” design of previous models, the new display will stretch from edge to edge, wrapping around the camera sensors, a design approach very similar to that of the Motorola Razr Ultra.

* Increased functionality: The main benefit of a larger screen is the ability to run full-featured apps natively. While previous Flips were limited to specific widgets and apps, the Z Flip 7 is expected to allow for a much richer experience from the flip, a point where Motorola has led the way.

This move is a clear strategic response to the competition. Samsung, which traditionally sets the standard in design, appears to be adopting a successful feature of its rival to keep up with the usability.

"The Galaxy Z Flip 7 could finally let you use almost any Android software without opening the device, a change consumers have been asking for and that would put it on par with its direct competition," notes an Android Police analysis.

What other improvements are expected in the Galaxy Z Flip 7?

While the cover screen is the star of the show, it's not the only improvement rumored for the planned release at the Unpacked event in July 2025.

* Larger internal screen: The main screen could also grow slightly, going from 6.7 to 6.85 inches, thanks to thinner bezels.

* Higher capacity battery: The battery capacity is expected to increase to 4,300 mAh (from 4,000 mAh on the Z Flip 6), which should translate into longer battery life, a critical point for foldable devices.

* Split power: One of the most interesting leaks suggests that, unlike the Z Fold 7 which would exclusively use Snapdragon, the Z Flip 7 could come equipped with Samsung's Exynos 2500 chip in some regions, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite in others.

* Cameras unchanged: Most reports indicate that the camera system won't receive a significant hardware upgrade, maintaining the combination of a 50MP main sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens. Image quality improvements are expected to come primarily from software processing and AI.

* Possible cheaper FE model: There are strong rumors about the launch of a Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, a more affordable version to compete with Motorola's entry-level models and make foldable technology more accessible.

With these changes, Samsung isn't just looking to catch up, it's also looking to redefine expectations for what a flip-style foldable phone can do. The combination of a fully functional cover display with Samsung's power and ecosystem could make the Z Flip 7 the device to beat in 2025.
