This is how the ATP rankings stand after Alcaraz's victory in Rome.

This is how the ATP rankings stand after Alcaraz's victory in Rome.

Carlos Alcaraz's victory over Jannik Sinner in the final of the Rome Masters 1000 almost definitively defines the positions the tennis players will occupy in the Roland Garros draw, and it's no small feat. Rome has always had its echoes in Paris, although Novak Djokovic, for example, has signed up for the Geneva tournament to gain some experience before the clay-court Grand Slam. The Serbian failed to make it past the first round in Monte Carlo or Madrid, and withdrew from the Foro Italico. He is in the final moments of preparation before attempting to shine again on the Philippe Chatrier, where he won Olympic gold last year.

Meanwhile, almost everyone else will be resting during this week's hiatus. Especially Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, protagonists of the final at the Foro Italico. It's true that the Italian is still fresh, having been on leave due to his doping ban since February, and his first official foray onto clay was at this home tournament. But perhaps because of this inactivity, his body has reminded him that the adrenaline of competition can also cause blisters, like the one he's been suffering these days on the sole of his foot. The San Cándido native wanted to return home, wrapped in cotton wool and protected and supported by his fans, and he hoped to perhaps play a couple of matches, but he reached the final day of the tournament and arrives with plenty of miles to spare for Roland Garros, the Grand Slam he's aiming for after exercising his sovereignty on the hard court.

Alcaraz will also be hitting the ground running, having just completed a great clay-court season after titles in Monte Carlo and Rome, and the final in Barcelona. And he's having a great time on this surface, where he can play more tennis than all his rivals.

Thus, the result in Rome changes the order for the Parisian draw, and the biggest beneficiary is Carlos Alcaraz. "It's great to be the second seed knowing that I won't be meeting Sinner before the final, if we both make it," Alcaraz said of this substantial change for Roland Garros. It's worth remembering that last year the Spaniard and the Italian met in the semifinals.
