In his film adaptation, Superman was the most human and serious superhero - along with Batman - of those who populate the DC and Marvel universes, and that has changed radically in the saga's revival at the hands of James Gunn , who has brought his trademark humor.

Gunn achieved huge success at the helm of the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' saga , three films that grossed nearly $2.5 billion and were filled with jokes, zany characters and a huge dose of irreverent humor.

That's what he conveyed in this new Superman, which hits theaters worldwide this Friday. But Peter Quill and Clark Kent/Superman bear little resemblance, and even less so do the actors who play them, Chris Pratt and newcomer to this type of film, David Corenswet.

Corenswet inherits the role previously played by Henry Cavill and Christopher Reeve . And while he physically resembles them, has the necessary muscles, and shows the effort he put into the work, he lacks the charisma of his predecessors or Pratt.

It's not easy to fit into Gunn's particular sense of humor and that is the film's main flaw , which also doesn't sufficiently exploit the actress who does adapt perfectly to this style, Rachel Brosnahan , who plays a Louis Lane with little prominence.

Along with them, a wonderful and evil Lex Luthor , played by Nicholas Hoult, and a group of fun and surreal superheroes - or metahumans as they are called in the film -, the 'Justice gang', composed of Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Nathan Fillon) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) .

The three of them help a Superman who begins the story in a low period, defeated by 'the Moravian hammer', which is nothing more than a puppet in the hands of Luthor, who is developing a technology that could allow him to control the world .

Superman recovers at an Antarctic base where a group of robots watch over his safety and project a virtual message his parents coded into the ship they sent him to Earth in as a baby. Interestingly, his father is played by Bradley Cooper , much like Marlon Brando in the first film starring Christopher Reeve .

From there begins the chaos caused by both an unnecessarily complex plot and the number of characters and monsters that pass through the story, from Superman's flying dog with superpowers, called Krypto , to a powerful villain played by Venezuelan María Gabriela de Faría, several dumb blondes or a small gremlin that grows to the height of a skyscraper.

Gunn has brought the Marvel style to the DC universe, which he has filled with spectacle, big battles and strident colors, but at the same time he has maintained that human side of a Superman who dedicates his life to defending a planet to which he does not belong . Whether or not it works at the box office remains to be seen, but what is clear is that the target is a young audience who knows the world of superheroes like the back of their hand, because throughout the film you can see tributes to the X-Men, Iron-Man and the Avengers or to previous versions of Superman himself.

More like Christopher Reeve's than Henry Cavill's, from whose dark tone it completely departs. It's more a recovery of the innocence that Reeve exuded in that first 'Superman' from 1978 in which the evil Lex Luthor was the great Gene Hackman and in which humor was more present than in later installments.

This Friday, the film hits theaters worldwide with a weekend box office forecast of $200 million , which would be an excellent start for the first film from DC Studios, of which Gunn is co-president alongside Peter Safran.
