However, this activity has become increasingly important in Western countries due to hygiene issues , as well as to prevent the spread of other viruses and bacteria that can affect the health of a home's inhabitants.

A study conducted by the University of Houston in 2017 analyzed the soles of the shoes of 280 participants and discovered that 26.4% tested positive for Clostridium difficile , a highly contagious bacteria capable of causing colon inflammation, diarrhea, and stomach pain, associated with chronic infections .
