UK pledges to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027

On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the United Kingdom would increase its defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, from 2.3% currently, to face new security challenges in Europe.

"I can announce that this government will deliver the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War," Keir Starmer told the House of Commons. This increase will come at the expense of the UK's aid budget, which will rise from 0.5% to 0.3% of GDP over the period, he added.
