Cannes 2025: a prize list that spares us the worst

AT A GLANCE - After twelve days of competition, the jury of the 78th festival, chaired by Juliette Binoche, has awarded its prizes. There's nothing to complain about regarding the Palme d'Or, but there are a few regrets nonetheless.
The suspense was at its peak. The whole city was in turmoil. When would the electricity come back on? A general blackout paralyzed Cannes . It felt like the beginning of an apocalyptic film. Fortunately, the power was restored for the ceremony. The awards ceremony didn't take place by candlelight, as a sort of tribute to Barry Lyndon . That would have been quite the spectacle.
The show was sober, fast-paced, vaguely predictable, and not annoying enough. Juliette Binoche wore a loose-fitting blue dress. "This is the end," she said. She didn't have Jim Morrison's voice. Jeremy Strong wore a strange tuxedo of an indeterminate shade. The short film winner thanked France for its support of artists, but couldn't help but mention Gaza. He was pretty much the only one. Have film people finally realized that the festival isn't made for that? Let's not kid ourselves.
