Hema, Action, Gifi… Why discount stores are booming in Île-de-France, but less so in Paris

Non-food discounters are experiencing rapid expansion in the Île-de-France region, especially in the outer suburbs, according to a study released Thursday, June 26, by the Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI). However, some well-known brands still seem to be avoiding the capital, particularly due to high rents.

"We come every two months, mainly to buy creative things. It's not very expensive and the quality is good," explains the duo. Latifa, a 42-year-old business owner, came to stock up on household and decorative products among the store's many other customers.
This Action store is one of the 960 bazaars in the Île-de-France region identified by the region's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), which published a study on the subject this Thursday, June 26. According to this document, Paris is the only department in the Île-de-France region to have seen its number of bazaars, especially small independent ones, decrease between 2018 and 2023 (-17%).
