"Big press conference tomorrow morning at 10:00 (14:00 GMT) , in the Oval Office, regarding a major trade deal with representatives of a great and highly respected country," the White House tenant wrote on his Truth Social network. "The first of many," Donald Trump added, in capital letters as usual, without providing further details on the scope of the agreement or the country concerned.
According to the New York Times , it could be the United Kingdom. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Donald Trump reported "productive negotiations" at the end of March. Since returning to power, the American president has triggered an economic earthquake, notably with what he himself dubbed "Liberation Day" on April 2, when he erected a wall of new taxes on products imported into the United States. Donald Trump has since partially backtracked, via a 90-day pause, and promised "deals" with major US partners to ease the bill. None have yet been announced.
But discussions are underway with several countries such as Canada, South Korea, and Vietnam. American and Chinese officials are also meeting in Switzerland this weekend to lay the groundwork for negotiations. China is the main target of Donald Trump, who has imposed a 145% tariff on "made in China" products. Beijing has retaliated by implementing its own 125% tariffs on American products.
