Health. Why you should treat a sprained ankle as quickly as possible

A sprain usually occurs after twisting the foot during a fall, a misstep, or a loss of balance. It is characterized by the overstretching or partial or complete rupture of at least one ligament, most often the "lateral collateral ligament" located under the bony bulge on the outside of the ankle.
This injury should not be neglected. Without proper treatment, it can lead to serious complications:
- repeated sprains;
- chronic ankle instability;
- early osteoarthritis.
But how do you know if it's a sprain or just pain caused by a misstep?
The French National Authority for Health (HAS) recommends consulting a healthcare professional if, after twisting your ankle, you notice at least one of these signs:
- pain that prevents you from continuing your activity (walking, running, etc.);
- swelling within 24 hours of the incident;
- persistent difficulty walking or putting weight on your ankle.
Ideally, it's recommended to have your ankle assessed within 24 hours of the injury. This initial assessment is crucial to rule out a fracture, recommend additional tests such as an X-ray, and promptly begin appropriate treatment.
Rehabilitation, the key to recoveryIf a sprain is diagnosed, rehabilitation should begin as soon as possible, sometimes immediately after the injury. This process is personalized based on the severity of the sprain and your overall health.
The HAS emphasizes the importance of "active" rehabilitation. By this, understand that it's preferable for you to perform exercises actively. While respecting the pain, of course.
