Every Sunday, Le Progrès delves into the history of Lyon, both great and small. The history of its people and its heritage. This week, the story of the Boucherie des Terreaux. To the west of the Porte de la Lanterne, located on the site of the previously filled-in moat of the same name, the "new" butcher's shop stood in the mid- 16th century. Close to the Saône, it was then one of the two major butcher's shops in the "new" districts of Lyon, along with the Hôtel-Dieu.

It wasn't a butcher's shop in the modern sense, with its refrigerated stall and pre-cut meat, but rather a complex comprising a slaughterhouse area and another dedicated to direct sales to consumers. For hygiene reasons and to avoid infection, the sale of raw meat was prohibited outside of designated areas.

Numerous complaints had been registered against "butchers who dry their leathers outside these areas, who throw rubbish and blood on the verges of waterways or the edges of ports. The spectacle of the port of La Feuillée...
