2026 municipal elections in Lyon: towards an LFI candidate in the first round?

During a public meeting held in Villeurbanne on Wednesday, May 21, LFI coordinator Manuel Bompard discussed the party's ambitions for the 2026 municipal elections in Lyon.
Alongside LFI MPs Gabriel Amard and Abdelkader Lahmar, the party's national coordinator, Manuel Bompard, attended a public meeting this Wednesday, May 21, at the CCVA in Villeurbanne. And as the strategy for the 2026 municipal elections in the Rhône region is being refined, Jean-Luc Mélenchon's party could well be ambitious, particularly in Lyon.
Manuel Bompard indeed told our colleagues at Le Progrès that LFI was preparing " the conditions for a list in the first round in Lyon ", without, however, excluding a coalition with the other left-wing forces, on condition of " finding ourselves in programmatic discussions ".
In Villeurbanne, currently led by Socialist mayor Cédric Van Styvendael, if an "anti-LFI" line is chosen, LFI will field a candidate in the first round, he asserts. Leaders will be designated before this summer, before choosing the top candidates, probably around September.
