The boundaries of the universe have been pushed back once again. An international team of astronomers has identified a brand new galaxy, dubbed MoM-z14. It may even be the oldest and most distant ever observed. It is thought to have begun emitting light 280 million years after the Big Bang, which itself occurred 13.8 billion years ago. The discovery, first reported by New Scientist , has been hailed by the researchers as a "cosmic miracle."

It was made possible by the James Webb Space Telescope , which can observe the outer reaches of the universe. Photometry and spectroscopy techniques were used to calculate the distance traveled by the light from MoM-z14. Its brightness also indicates that its mass is similar to that of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy orbiting the Milky Way, whose mass is about one-tenth that of our galaxy.

We need you to bring to the public debate the voice of a free media, which upholds the struggles of the world of research and shares its discoveries.
