Assault on a mayor in Isère: the suspect will be presented to an investigating judge on Sunday after leaving police custody

The mayor was attacked on Wednesday by a man who had lived in the village of 1,200 inhabitants for many years.

The man suspected of having attacked and seriously injured the mayor of Villeneuve-de-Marc (Isère) on Wednesday, August 6, will be brought before an investigating judge on Sunday, August 10, reports ICI Isère (formerly France Bleu) , citing the Grenoble public prosecutor.
The suspect, a 59-year-old man, was arrested two days after the attack , on Friday, in the commune of Charantonnay. He will have spent 48 hours in police custody. A judicial investigation into attempted murder of a person in a position of public authority has been opened.
The announcement of the attack was followed by numerous condemnations from elected officials and also from Emmanuel Macron. "When an elected official is attacked, it is the Nation that stands by him. When its representatives are attacked, the Republic must be severe and uncompromising," the president reacted Wednesday on X.
