Editorial. Greenland, a platform to defend a certain world order

Editorial. Greenland, a platform to defend a certain world order

By visiting Greenland on Sunday, Emmanuel Macron , the first head of state to set foot on the immense Arctic icefield since Donald Trump's threats of annexation , is doing much more than showing his support for the 57,000 Inuit inhabitants. This detour through the autonomous Danish territory, carefully staged by the Élysée Palace, on the road that took him to the Canadian G7 that same evening, is a strong message sent on the international scene and more particularly to the United States.

This trip first of all concretizes his speech delivered on June 9 in Nice at the opening of the UN summit on the oceans . "The abyss is not for sale. No more than Greenland is for the taking," he had hammered home. A statement that did not go unnoticed by defending the pot of rare and polar earth against the pot of iron of Uncle Sam. In Greenland, Emmanuel Macron wishes to make the voice of Europe heard and unite his diplomatic policy. Certainly, behind this European voluntarism there is the desire to continue to exist politically when, on the national level, it appears more weakened than ever. But in Greenland as in Ukraine, the President of the Republic seems determined to preserve the economic, environmental and climatic interests of our continent's rare earths . Just as he is to defend these strategic and militarily crucial places, gateways to Europe. This is all the more so as the European Union struggles to make a united voice heard at the negotiating table on the world order: war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, trade war, fight against climate change... In short, Emmanuel Macron has skillfully used Greenland to make himself the herald of opposition to the imperialist ambitions of President Trump.
