A motion voted on June 26th during the Municipal Council calls on the President of the Republic to recognize the Palestinian State "without delay."

After announcing on the same day that the City of Lyon would soon be twinned with the Palestinian city of Jericho , various political groups voted, during the City Council of June 26, a wish for the recognition "without delay" of the State of Palestine.

The Ecologists, Progressives and Republicans, Lyon en Commun and Pour Lyon et Socialistes groups that voted for the wish recall having been "publicly moved by the terrible terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023" , but can "only note the ongoing disaster, particularly in Gaza where the humanitarian situation is catastrophic." According to the latest report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 54,000 Gazans have been killed and 125,000 injured. He added: "The urgent need is to save what can still be saved: this requires the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages still held in Gaza, an immediate and lasting ceasefire, and the restoration of unhindered access to humanitarian aid."

They also indicate "that the diplomatic route is the only possible outcome. This is why we ask the President of the Republic to recognize, without delay, a Palestinian State. (…) This recognition is a fundamental step, which is fully in line with the "two-state solution", which France has historically defended and which is the only one capable of guaranteeing peace and mutual security for the two peoples in the long term." As a reminder, the Green mayor and president of Lyon and its Metropolis had, on May 31, already signed an appeal for the recognition of Palestine in L'Humanité . Grégory Doucet had also written to Emmanuel Macron on June 17.

After Spain and Ireland, France should therefore "also take this decisive step, despite the postponement - which we deplore - of the international conference announced by the President of the Republic, and which should constitute in itself a major diplomatic initiative." They conclude: "Reviving the idea of a just and lasting peace, in such a desperate situation, is the only way to interrupt the ongoing tragedy. The commitment of our City, beyond divisions, to human rights and peace obliges us: let us be there."
