In Washington, German ChancellorFriedrich Merz , a Christian Democrat, hinted this week that military support could be put in place, saying that "the question would arise as to whether there would be a need for a decision subject to a mandate" from the Bundestag, according to Der Spiegel . This "wording full of innuendo" referred to the authorization given by Parliament to the army to intervene abroad.
