"A stab in the back": Real Madrid has never forgiven Luis Enrique for the "betrayal" of his departure to Barça

The PSG coach faces one of his former clubs this Wednesday in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup. He hasn't left lasting memories at the club in the Spanish capital.

As if the scar had never really healed. Bringing up his name among Real Madrid fans is like bringing up old grudges. "He's a traitor," says Alvaro, 62. "He came as a kid, he celebrated goals with us, and then left for Barcelona for free." So this is Luis Enrique 's original sin with the Spanish capital club: joining the Merengue's arch-rival. He arrived from Sporting Gijón at the age of 21.

"It was a stab in the back," Miguel, 65, still says today. "He quickly forgot about us, he proudly displayed himself in the Barça jersey. It's unforgivable." The 213 matches and 18 goals scored in five seasons at Real (1991-1996) did nothing to change that. Despite winning a league, cup, and Spanish Super Cup in the white jersey, Luis Enrique doesn't exactly leave a positive memory in Madrid.
