The Nations League's legacy in the competitions that matter to Les Bleus remains uncertain. In 2022, the failed edition did not prevent them from reaching the World Cup final, narrowly losing to Argentina on penalties. In 2025, they finished third, narrowly beaten by Spain (5-4) and triumphing over Germany (0-2) , both times with a reserve team.

The first is because the French team is missing too many of its usual defenders - William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano and Jules Koundé - and the second is because Didier Deschamps has had to logically rotate players with an erratic future in the national team, such as Malo Gusto and Loïc Badé, as good as they were, and they were, especially the central defender, who was imperious in his first selection.
