Club World Cup João Pedro scores twice in his first start

Chelsea's new signing shone in the semi-final on Tuesday night. Ironically, he ended the hopes of his former club, Fluminense.

João Pedro didn't miss his first match for Chelsea as a starter. The 23-year-old Brazilian striker, who joined from Brighton just a week ago for a fee of nearly €70 million, scored twice, scoring both goals for his club on Tuesday night in the Club World Cup semi-final against Fluminense (2-0 victory).

He first opened the scoring with a magnificent curled shot (18th).

He then achieved a superb personal feat before firing a powerful shot just under the crossbar (56th).

João Pedro was careful not to celebrate his two goals ostentatiously, out of respect for the club where he started out, which he left five years ago to go into exile in England, to Watford.

"It's a dream debut," said the hero of the day after the match. "I don't think it could have gone better. I'm sorry for Fluminense, but I'm a professional and Chelsea pay me to score goals."

His coach, Enzo Maresca, also highlighted his new signing's excellent performance. "I'm very happy for Joao," he said. "He has the qualities to turn matches like today around. He was on vacation (before the tournament) , so he's probably a little fresher than the others."

And, more generally: "We knew João's talent. We signed him because last season we faced many teams with low blocks. And his qualities are very good against those types of teams."

João Pedro proved it in his first start.
