Pepe Reina announces retirement and plans to become a coach

Spanish international goalkeeper Pepe Reina (37 caps) announced in an interview with Movistar that he would retire at the end of the season, which is Como's last Serie A match and the Scudetto-deciding home game against Inter. With the Spanish national team, often blocked by Iker Casillas and Victor Valdés, he still won Euro 2008 and 2012 as well as the 2010 World Cup.
Reina trained at La Masia and began his career at Barça before becoming a key player at Villarreal. However, it was at Liverpool that he played the most matches (394 matches) and was at the top of his game. He was notably voted the Premier League's best goalkeeper in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Following his departure from Liverpool in 2014, he spent most of the rest of his career in Italy between Naples, Milan, Lazio and now Como, interspersed with a very brief stint at Guardiola's Bayern (3 matches in 2014-2015) and a two-year stint at Villarreal (2022-2024).
During his 25-year career, the goalkeeper won (in addition to his national titles) an FA Cup, an English League Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, a Community Shield with Liverpool, a Coppa Italia with Napoli and the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.
In addition to announcing his retirement, Pepe Reina has stated that he wants to embark on a coaching career, starting next season. "Every day, I think a little more like a coach than a goalkeeper," he said. And the Spanish goalkeeper has had a good career, having worked under Rafael Benitez, Pep Guardiola and Simone Inzaghi .
