Voted Man of the Match, a French footballer rewarded with... 55 kg of potatoes

When it comes to unusual awards, it's hard to beat that. On Sunday, during a Danish Premier League match between Sønderjyske and Nordsjaelland, French defender Maxime Soulas was named man of the match. His team won 3-2, and the 26-year-old opened the scoring... but that's not what will be remembered most from the match.

At the end of the match, Soulas was presented with... a wheelbarrow full of potatoes. That's 55 kilos of potatoes as a trophy. A funny but very real local tradition. "I received 55 kg of potatoes after my last match," confirmed the player, visibly amused by this surprise.

And there was no question of wasting anything. Rather than keeping this stock for himself, the Frenchman preferred to share it: "I gave the potatoes to my club's kitchen and they gave some to a social restaurant," he said.
