Vuelta 2025: Almeida triumphs at the top of the Angliru, the ranking

Vuelta 2025: Almeida triumphs at the top of the Angliru, the ranking

The Tour of Spain runs from August 23 to September 14, with high expectations surrounding Vingegaard... But not only that.

The Vuelta a España began on Saturday, August 23. And for once, the field is very strong for this Tour of Spain, with the presence of Jonas Vingegaard, who is hoping for his first title. The 2025 edition runs until September 14 and will take in several countries, from Turin to Madrid, via Voiron in the French Alps and Andorra, for a total of 3,151 km. Jonas Vingegaard, Joao Almeida, Jorgenson, Pidcock, and Giulio Ciccone are the main favorites for the race. David Gaudu, who withdrew from the Tour de France, will remain the French attraction in this Tour of Spain.

After a very difficult climb with no real attack, Joao Almeida and Jonas Vingegaard battled for victory at the summit of Angliru. After leading almost the entire climb, the Portuguese rider from Team UAE Emirates finally won in a strange downhill finish that seemed to have surprised the Dane, who is nevertheless very familiar with the climb.

What a sight to see Almeida and Vingegaard practically at a standstill on monstrous slopes a few kilometers from the finish. The Portuguese insists and risks being countered at the end.

The two strong men of this Vuelta are now alone at the front with a strong pace from the Portuguese and a Dane who is not moving from the wheel of the Portuguese less than 4 kilometers from the finish.

Almeida, Kuss, Vingegaard and Hindley are at the front, Felix Gall (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) and Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) are struggling to keep up and are behind, just like Jorgenson a few minutes ago.

The gap is melting very quickly from the start of the final climb which promises to be epic, the gaps are going to be significant.

Protesters once again disrupted the race by standing in the middle of the road, forcing the breakaway to dismount...

Led by UAE Emirates and Vine for Almeida, the peloton is back within 2'30 of the breakaway. Victory on this 13th stage should be decided between the favorites with 13 kilometers remaining and the final climb with the Angliru.

The penultimate climb of the day is the Alto del Cordal. A 5.5 km climb with an average gradient of 8.8%. The breakaway still has a lead of almost 4 minutes over the peloton, but that shouldn't be enough in the event of a big duel between the favorites.

The first climb has taken its toll on this stage of the Vuelta. There are only five left at the front, including Italians Tiberi and Bob Jungels, who seem to be the strongest. Nicolas Vinokourov, Jefferson Cepeda, and Gianmarco Garofoli complete the group.

No major changes have been made in this Vuelta for over an hour, with the 25 people still at the front of the race, with a gap of around 3 minutes remaining with the front of the peloton.

Denmark's Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) is the most successful of all the men at the front in this breakaway at the Vuelta, with 10 victories (5 in the Giro, 3 in La Vuelta, 2 in the Tour de France). Luxembourg's Bob Jungels (Ineos Grenadiers) has won twice, once in the Tour and once in the Giro. Finally, France's Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ) has one victory at La Vuelta.

The breakaway of the day is once again very substantial on this 13th stage with 25 riders at the front including 4 French riders. They have a 3-minute lead over the peloton.

"I have a special relationship with L'Angliru. It's a brutal climb, very, very hard. I think it was the first time I really showed myself (14th in 2020, his first Vuelta, as a teammate of Primoz Roglic, editor's note). It will be my third time here and I hope to have good legs too. We can maybe aim for victory, but we have to see how my legs react. It would be a dream for me to win at L'Angliru. It's one of the most iconic climbs of La Vuelta, so it would really be a dream," said Vingegaard before today's stage.

The 2025 edition is very mountainous with 10 summit finishes.

In France, as in the rest of Europe, the 2025 Tour of Spain is broadcast live and in full by Eurosport.
