The Catalans won't tell you: this secret cove is their little paradise in summer

Less than a two-hour drive from Barcelona, this is the perfect destination for those looking to unwind in an enchanting natural setting. We're here in one of Catalonia's most magical coves. Surrounded by pine trees and orange cliffs, the color of the water is one of its most distinctive features: it's simply spectacular, offering a clear gradient of blues difficult to find elsewhere on the Catalan coast.
This visual spectacle is due to the fine, clear sand bottom covered by shallow waters. As you can imagine, it's a paradise for lovers of quiet and safe swimming with the family, since the cove is only 100 meters long. The beach has all the amenities you could want: sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, showers, toilets, and a beach restaurant, the Toc al Mar chiringuito, serving fish grilled over oak embers, tapas, paellas, sangria, wines, beers, and other soft drinks.
It's also a small snorkeling paradise with its many sandy areas where you can explore flatfish, Posidonia seagrass beds, cuttlefish, and octopus. Its small caves and crevices along the cliffs are ideal for exploring rock fish such as sea bream, red mullet, or moray eels by kayak or swimming, and spotting starfish, sea urchins, and sponges in various colors. There's also a diving center for those who want to explore the underwater world in depth, even at night!

Although beautiful, Aiguablava is very popular with locals and can be very busy during the summer. Accessing it by car can be difficult, as parking spaces are taken early in the morning. Fortunately, there is a municipal bus that connects the various coves in the municipality of Begur, which includes Aiguablava. Another option is to park further away and complete the route on foot. Despite these difficulties, everyone who reaches the cove agrees that it's worth the effort, just for the visuals!
If you're planning to visit this corner of paradise, consider public transport or arrive early in the morning. Consider staying in Begur, which boasts colonial-style houses and a beautiful castle. From the famous Camino de Ronda, directly accessible from Aiguablava, you'll have the opportunity to explore the charming nearby coves of Platja Fonda and Fornells. On the southern route, don't miss Sa Tuna and Aiguafreda, and to the north, Cala Illa Roja. These trails are ideal for hiking and offer magnificent panoramic views.
