New boss Brennan would like legendary Dublin trio back but on a few conditions

New boss Brennan would like legendary Dublin trio back but on a few conditions

It’s gearing up to be a fascinating season for Dublin, with new manager Ger Brennan at the helm.

A brilliant footballer with the Sky Blues, winning two All-Ireland titles, Brennan has excelled as a manager, and was the obvious choice to replace Dessie Farrell, after guiding Louth to their first Leinster SFC title since 1957.

The Dubs are in dire need of a fresh voice in camp, following their seven-point defeat to Tyrone on this year’s All-Ireland semi-final, but the return of a few experienced campaigners is another factor which could make all the difference.

Brian Fenton had the physique, the temperament, the hands. But so many elements of his game were clearly honed by sheer hard work and repetition. Especially his shooting. He so rarely missed. Right or left, his technique when shooting was so polished and almost always perfect. pic.twitter.com/NXobGljau3

And while Brennan does not want it to seem like he is chasing the likes of Brian Fenton, Jack McCaffrey, and Paul Mannion to make a comeback, he has opened the door, as long as the desire and form is there.

Speaking to media yesterday, he said: “If those fellas (players who have stepped away) have the hunger and the desire to go at it again and they’re fit and in form, I’ll certainly look at them,” he said. “If they’re not fit and in form and don’t have the hunger, they’ve given so much already, they’re taking someone else’s spot at that stage.

“I have an open door policy, which will be a revolving door as we progress through the National League. If there are guys in the group that are falling away physically, mentally or in terms of general output, someone else will come in to replace them and I think competition is certainly important that way throughout the whole season.”
