ROVELLASCA (Como) —A fire in an electrical substation abruptly interrupted the street food and amusement rides evening organized by a group of merchants on Saturday, knocking out power throughout the area and trapping a young woman in her apartment building's elevator. Firefighters from the Lomazzo detachment, along with Enel technicians, responded to the scene shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday in Rovellasca, on Via Carugo, in the Burghè Park area, where an evening featuring street food and amusement rides was underway.
According to technicians, the power outage, caused by the fire that started in an electrical substation, was caused by an overload caused by the systems connected to the line and operating simultaneously, which caused the short circuit that started the fire. The power outage affected not only the town square festival and the amusement park rides but also three surrounding streets, which were left completely in darkness. Firefighters also rescued a young woman trapped in an elevator during the outage.
Rovellasca Mayor Sergio Zauli and the Rovello Porro Civil Protection Department were also on site. Investigations are currently underway to determine where the electrical connections were located, especially those requiring the most power, and why the system failed, causing the outage throughout the area. This will help identify any anomalies in usage. Enel will, however, decide whether and how to proceed. Paola Pioppi
