A petrol pump exploded in Rome; the tanker driver is under investigation and charged with manslaughter.

There is a first name in the investigation by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office, against unknown persons until now, for the explosion of the fuel and LPG distributor on Via dei Gordiani, in the Prenestino district of the capital.

Roman prosecutors have added Mauro Bagaglini, the driver of the LPG tanker that caused the explosions at the service station, killing one person and injuring 45 others, to the list of suspects in the file for manslaughter, manslaughter, and serious injury.

Among these is Bagaglini himself, a 58-year-old who works for the company that managed the service station, Ecogasauto: he is the person who suffered the most injuries in the accident after Claudio Ercoli , the Eni inspector. A 67-year-old man died on Wednesday from extensive burns he sustained in the explosion.

Two explosions occurred shortly after 8 a.m.: a smaller one, caused by a leak of LPG during the refueling of the service station's tank, which brought the first aid team to the scene.

The second, much larger explosion occurred a few minutes later. According to the Rome Prosecutor's Office, it was a " Bleve ," an English acronym meaning "explosion caused by the expansion of gas produced by a pressurized liquid that has reached its boiling point."

LPG is transported in tankers, stored at a pressure that allows it to remain liquid and take up less space. It's likely that at some point, the tanker's cooling system and safety valves failed, causing the LPG to convert to a gaseous state and causing the explosion.

Regarding the condition of the injured, another patient among those injured in the explosion was admitted to the Major Burns Unit at Rome's Sant'Eugenio Hospital on Thursday. He has second- and third-degree burns covering 18.5% of his body surface, according to a bulletin released by the ASL Roma 2. Upon admission, the statement reads, "he is alert and stabilized. His prognosis is 60 days."
