Bertrand Cantat and the Netflix documentary reopening the case of his ex-wife's suicide: trouble for the former Noir Désir singer.

Bertrand Cantat and the Netflix documentary reopening the case of his ex-wife's suicide: trouble for the former Noir Désir singer.

Already convicted for the death of his girlfriend

Bertrand Cantat , frontman and founder of the historic French band Noir Désir , could once again end up in the crosshairs of French justice. Fifteen years after the death of his ex-wife Krisztina Rády , the Bordeaux prosecutor's office has decided to reopen the investigation into her alleged suicide, which occurred on January 10, 2010 , in the home she shared with her ex-husband, the singer.

A case reopened after the emergence of new elements and testimonies, never emerged in the previous court files on the death of Krisztina Rády, within the Netflix documentary “From rock star to murderer: the Cantant case” .

According to Attorney General Renaud Gaudeul , the documentary released on Netflix contains “unpublished statements and testimonies” that had not been included in the four previous proceedings, all of which were dismissed without consequences for the singer.

The Noir Désir frontman, now 61, was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2004 by Lithuanian justice for the murder of his partner Marie Trintignant , an actress and daughter of the famous Jean-Louis Trintignant. Trintignant was killed following a beating in a hotel room in Vilnius, where the actress was filming the television movie "Colette, une femme libre." Cantat was later released on parole in 2007 for good behavior.

Cantat will return to live with his ex-wife Krisztina Rády and their two children, despite the couple's divorce dating back to 2003. The woman is believed to have committed suicide by hanging herself at home, while her ex-husband slept in the same house, with her body found by her twelve-year-old son Milo. The autopsy revealed no traces of violence, and the investigation was closed several times, most recently in 2018.

The woman's death also officially marked the end of Noir Désir: Serge Tayssot-Gay left the group due to personal and musical incompatibilities with Cantat, and by mutual agreement the other three decided to disband the band.

Cantat, who released a new album in 2024 with the group Détroit, has not recently commented. His lawyer, Antonin Lévy , told AFP he had no formal news on the reopening of the investigation.
