Moments of real fear were experienced this morning, Wednesday, at Terminal 1 of Malpensa Airport when a man went on a rampage, first setting fire to a waste bin and then, armed with a hammer , damaging the check-in desks and information screens.

The scene was witnessed by many passengers, and it was a SEA employee who, noticing smoke rising from the upper deck, was the first to intervene and stop the man. Several others on board also intervened to prevent the attacker from attacking other passengers.

Border Police officers intervened immediately afterward and restrained him, while staff from the airport security company ICTS worked tirelessly to put out the flames. The SEA employee who intervened also reportedly suffered some injuries and was handed over to the emergency medical services.

The hammer-thrower was then taken to a holding cell by the Polaria officers who are now working to identify him and reconstruct what happened and the motives behind the act.
