The investigation
Crown Prince Haakon Magnus acknowledged the "difficult legal situation." The 28-year-old was born from a relationship prior to his mother's marriage and is not in line to succeed him. He faces up to 10 years in prison.

The son of the Crown Princess of Norway , Marius Borg Hoiby , faces serious charges. He has been charged with 32 crimes, including four rapes and assault, as well as death threats, assaulting a police officer, and violating traffic laws. If convicted, Norwegian Attorney General Sturla Henriksbo explained, he faces up to ten years in prison. Crown Prince Haakon Magnus of Norway acknowledged the difficult judicial situation in a brief statement. The Royal Palace reaffirmed the autonomy of the judiciary and did not release further comment.
Marius Borg Hoiby is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit , born from a relationship that preceded his mother's marriage to Crown Prince Haakon: he has therefore never held a position in the line of succession . He is 28 years old. He has been under investigation since his arrest in early August 2024 for an alleged assault on his then-girlfriend. The investigation has been lengthy. "The charges have been filed and the proceedings will now proceed to court, which will judge the outcome," Haakon declared in a brief statement released to public television NRK .
There are four charges of sexual assault, including filming girls in their private lives. The incidents that led to the 32 charges are believed to have occurred between 2018 and 2024. The trial could begin in January 2026. According to the newspaper Nettavisen , Marius Borg Hoiby has reportedly had his diplomatic passport revoked. He himself stated through his lawyer that he "takes the accusations very seriously but does not acknowledge any wrongdoing, especially those involving violence and sexual abuse."
The case, however, has shocked the Norwegian royal family. "Rape and violence in close relationships are very serious crimes that can leave indelible scars and destroy lives. The maximum penalty for the crimes mentioned in the indictment is up to ten years in prison ," said Public Prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo. "For the prosecution, it is important that there be equality before the law. The fact that Marius Borg Hoiby is a member of the royal family should not mean he is treated more leniently or harshly than similar crimes committed by others."
