The Great Painters of the Twentieth Century. At the Mac, from Dufrêne to Schifano

July 26, 2025

Last days to visit the Mac Museum in Lissone with a new format, 25 years after its opening.
Fifty works by great painters of the second half of the 20th century, all waiting to be rediscovered, from Karel Appel to Piero Dorazio, from Achille Perilli to François Dufrêne, including Claude Bellegarde, Emilio Scanavino, and Mario Schifano. Plus, a series of works by a contemporary artist, ranging from paintings to drawings, from installations to videos, the result of a project in which the creations were conceived in dialogue with the canvases of the Historical Collection. Two exhibitions to be explored and explored over a double weekend of guided tours, with expert speakers describing the exhibitions and their artists. This is what the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lissone will offer today, tomorrow, and again next weekend, during its final days before the summer break. The guided tours will be held today, tomorrow, Saturday, August 2nd, and Sunday, August 3rd, each at 4:00 PM. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended by writing to [email protected].
In the rooms on Viale Elisa Ancona, visitors can admire approximately 50 paintings from the exhibition "Collezione 25," a new display of the Permanent Collection derived from the historic editions of the Lissone Prize, held from 1946 to 1967. The idea is to showcase the MAC's heritage with a new format, 25 years after its opening. Introduced by new technical descriptions that analyze the works in depth, visitors can see emblematic canvases such as Appel's "Composition," a work influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting, or Bellegarde's two late 1950s/early 1960s creations, "Cyclope" and "Sans titre." Also on display are Dorazio's masterpieces "Teodora," influenced by the jazz music the artist was passionate about, and "Tenax," as well as Dufrêne's décollages "L'anglaise" and "Art arctique," Perilli's unmistakable scratched works, Scanavino's disturbing "Ecce Homo" and "Frammenti," and one of Schifano's famous monochromes, "Cartello N.20."
Alongside this exhibition, another, titled "Rendez-Vous. Alice Ronchi," features some of Ronchi's works from the "Amami Ancora" project: paintings, videos, and installations recently acquired by the Museum and added to its collection. The MAC will remain open until August 3rd, then close and reopen on September 3rd.
