WATCH THE VIDEO The foundation stone has been laid for the new green plant built by Danieli di Buttrio for the Swedish steel giant SSAB in Luleå. The ceremony took place in the presence of the Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Business and Industry, Ebba Busch, local institutions and industry leaders.
The project, worth approximately €1 billion, will create one of the most advanced steel plants in the world, with a production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes of specialty steel per year and a 7% reduction in Sweden's total CO2 emissions, a historic milestone in Europe's energy transition.
In her speech, Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch explained that "This plant is concrete proof that industrial transition is possible. It is an investment that reduces emissions, creates jobs, and strengthens the competitiveness of Sweden and Europe. This is the largest research and innovation initiative ever undertaken in Sweden's modern history: a project that transforms today's scientific discoveries into tomorrow's technology, putting it at the service of our country and the global market," the Deputy Prime Minister concluded.
The new mini-mill will be equipped with the most advanced technologies developed by Danieli: two highly energy-efficient DigiMelter furnaces powered by Q-One®, a latest-generation secondary metallurgy plant, an integrated casting and direct rolling line, and water and fume treatment systems that meet the highest environmental standards.
"We are honored that Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch has defined this project as a symbol of a new industrial era," emphasized Danieli CEO Giacomo Mareschi Danieli. "It confirms that Italian technological innovation can generate concrete environmental, economic, and social benefits, driving the global transition toward a decarbonized and competitive steel mill."
The new plant will begin operations by the end of 2028 and reach full capacity in 2029. With this achievement, Danieli confirms its position as a European technological champion in the green transition and a strategic partner for the most ambitious sustainability projects globally.
