Celiac Disease Increases in Italy, First Data on Children

"The law strongly desired by the Honorable Mulè that led to the introduction of screening for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease in the pediatric population is a measure that has had a good response with the participation of 5,535 children and over 400 pediatricians. The first results indicate a prevalence of autoantibodies against type 1 diabetes comparable to that of other European states, while an increase in the prevalence of celiac disease is highlighted". This was explained by the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, on the occasion of the presentation to the Chamber of Deputies of the project 'Vulnerabili', to guarantee insulin to indigent people thanks to the collaboration of eight associations and the Banco Farmaceutico. "This data - said the minister - will serve as a compass in defining a future strategy for health planning".
