Gemonio - Gemonio, first interventions towards the doubling of the railway towards Cittiglio - Varese Laghi - Varese News
The orange nets that appeared in recent days are the starting signal for the preparatory work for the doubling of the tracks of the Saronno-Varese-Laveno railway line in the section between Gemonio and Cittiglio. An intervention approved in July 2023 by the Lombardy Region and which should begin in the coming months, with the aim of making it easier for trains to cross even in the initial (or final) part of the section that connects Lake Maggiore to Milan.
The works involve a stretch of railway approximately 2.3 kilometres long and include a series of ancillary works such as the reconstruction of the pedestrian walkway that crosses the tracks between via Battisti and via Verdi, the widening of the cycle/pedestrian underpass on via Roma, the arrangement or creation of some sidewalks and above all a wider bridge than the current one that allows the railway to pass over via Verdi (or state road 394) not far from the border with Cittiglio.
Two areas have been fenced off at this time, although for different purposes. First of all, the level crossing on Via IV Novembre – a few steps from state road 394 – has been temporarily closed to allow for preparatory work to begin on the doubling site.
In particular, the workers are working on a large methane pipe , located a few meters underground. Once these works are completed, the level crossing will be reopened until the work on the second track begins .
The other area affected by the intervention of the workers in these days is the one located near the “della segheria” bridge (opening photo) on the border with Cocquio Trevisago. That bridge is not included in the railway doubling but the surrounding land will still be part of the area of the future construction site. For this reason, the barriers that run along the initial part of via Castelli, the provincial road that connects Gemonio with Azzio and Valcuvia, have already been installed.
