Giani says yes to running again. The Italian Left, "An interesting development." The Five Star Movement remains cold.

Florence, July 9, 2025 – There has been widespread reaction to Giani's announcement that he will run for a second term. "The fact that President Giani has explicitly stated his willingness to run again is a new development that cannot be ignored. I agree with the approach of building broad alliances in the regions where elections are held, because the regional elections at the end of the year will be the final political test before the general election."

This was stated by Democratic Party MEP Dario Nardella , former mayor of Florence, in an interview on the program "Darsena Europa" on Toscana TV, regarding the current president's willingness to run for a second term.

That said, Tuscany is in a unique situation because we have an outgoing president in the first round who has done well and is well-regarded by the citizens. Therefore, I believe that if the regional secretary of the Democratic Party in Tuscany, Fossi , from his authoritative position, takes the lead in this process, takes the lead and gets the Democratic Party to take it, embraces Eugenio Giani 's willingness to run again, and works for a broad coalition, even with the willingness to discontinue the government team and its issues, he would have the overwhelming majority of the Democratic Party on his side. And I would be with them.

Even the Left is not immune to Giani's availability and the key points of his potential new mandate. The suggestions outlined by the Regional President "are suggestions that I consider useful, interesting, and worthy of support, at least in terms of their title . Because, as is easy to understand, the title is one thing, and the implementation is another: this is always true, even in school subjects, let alone in government decisions."

This is what Nicola Fratoianni, MP and national secretary of the Italian Left, explained to Dire regarding the fall vote in Tuscany. Giani highlighted three key issues: social income, public water, and medically assisted end-of-life care, along with a fight for rights in the healthcare system.

Regarding the regional dossier, the AVS parliamentarian had himself been calling in recent months for a programmatic change in the government's actions in Tuscany: "I've already said on several occasions that the issue is how to construct an element of discontinuity politically and overall," he recalls. "It has never been an issue tied to one person in particular, specifically Eugenio Giani. It wasn't yesterday, and it isn't today."

What interests the Italian Left, Fratoianni points out, "is the overall picture, which, obviously, also involves the need to build an alliance. This alliance, as far as we're concerned, is first and foremost the heart of an alternative coalition made up of AVS, PD, and M5S: we're working toward this goal."

"I've always been hesitant to consider replacing an outgoing regional president without political motivation. From this perspective, we are now open to engaging in a programmatic discussion with Giani" in Tuscany. Indeed, Angelo Bonelli explained to Agenzia Dire, "the sooner the better, because victory in elections is never a given," he warned. He added: "The time has come to build a framework based on a program."

For the Green Left MP and co-spokesperson for Green Europe, essentially, "a programmatic discussion" with Giani is necessary. This is precisely after formalizing his willingness to run for governor again. "Social income and public water are very important openings," observes Bonelli. He, however, broadens his reasoning: beyond this, "we are ready to ask for more . The energy issue and renewables are a fundamental element": in Piombino, for example, in 2026, "the commitment must be kept and the regasification vessel sent away. Then there is the issue of public health , but also the development of a plan for the protection of biodiversity by implementing protected areas in Tuscany." These, he concludes, "are fundamental elements that differentiate us from a right-wing party that is questioning civil, social, and environmental rights. And that is turning back the hands of history."

Five Star Movement members are lukewarm. Tuscany remains the "most difficult" region to vote in this fall. Moreover, "after a term in opposition, it was not easy to imagine a convergence." This is what national Five Star Movement circles told Dire when asked about Giani's candidacy. The regional president accompanied the announcement with an invitation to potential allies, including members of the Five Star Movement , to discuss the program , starting with some new developments regarding social income, public water, and end-of-life care. The situation remains stalemate, however, according to Five Star Movement member Giani, further emphasizing the point, "it is a proposal that does not warm hearts."
